It is designed for use in soft tissue approximation where absorbable sutures are appropriate. The natural composition of the suture allows for enzymatic degradation within the body, resulting in complete absorption over time.

This plain gut suture provides immediate tensile strength and begins to lose strength rapidly after implantation. It is generally absorbed within 70 days. Due to its biological origin and absorbability, it is associated with a mild tissue reaction, making it suitable for delicate tissue closures where minimal long-term foreign material is preferred.
